A trail is a path, track or other route or thoroughfare used for travel. Its precise meaning varies. The term is most widely used for a beaten or maintained path used for travel off highways. Have you gone out with just 1 other horse? Does he do this then as well? How about riding another horse and ponying him. Biggest problem is that at his age he is pretty well set in his ways. How long have you owned him? From what you describe it sounds like kids used to race him. So when he is in the pack he thinks you are all going to take off and run. He is refusing to go forward the same way a barrel horse does when going into the arena. Whether out of nervousness or fear of pain is unknown. My retired barrel horse has to be out front when we trail ride. She will walk only if out front. If I try to keep her in the group she prances and dances. So we walk out front.
